Health and Safety policy
Movers Soho Health and Safety Policy
Movers Soho is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, customers, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our removals and related services. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with moving, handling, transport, packing and storage activities.
Our aim is to prevent injury, ill health, property damage and environmental harm by integrating safety into every aspect of our work. We will comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice for the removals sector.
Policy Objectives
We will maintain clear, practical arrangements to:
Identify and assess hazards associated with removals, including lifting, carrying, access, vehicle operations and handling of equipment and customer possessions.
Implement effective control measures to reduce risks to an acceptable level and review these measures regularly.
Provide suitable information, instruction, training and supervision to all staff so they can carry out their duties safely and competently.
Ensure safe use, handling and storage of work equipment, packing materials and any substances used in the course of our services.
Promote a positive safety culture in which all staff understand their responsibilities and feel able to report issues or suggest improvements without fear of reprisal.
Continually improve our health and safety performance by monitoring, auditing and regularly reviewing this policy.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management at Movers Soho has overall responsibility for health and safety. Management will:
Provide suitable resources, including time and budget, to implement and maintain effective health and safety arrangements.
Ensure that risk assessments are carried out for our activities, including domestic and commercial moves, packing services, loading and unloading operations, and the operation of vehicles and equipment.
Review accident, incident and near-miss reports, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
Set and review health and safety objectives and targets, including reductions in accidents, improvements in training completion and better reporting of hazards.
Lead by example and reinforce safe working practices through regular communication and engagement with staff.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees of Movers Soho have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Employees are expected to:
Follow all safety instructions, procedures and training provided by the company.
Use vehicles, tools, lifting aids, personal protective equipment and other resources correctly and report any defects immediately.
Cooperate with managers and supervisors to enable Movers Soho to comply with legal and policy requirements.
Report accidents, incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions at the earliest opportunity so that appropriate action can be taken.
Refrain from any reckless behaviour or misuse of equipment that could put themselves, colleagues or the public at risk.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Movers Soho will conduct and maintain risk assessments for our typical moving and handling activities and for any non-routine tasks that present significant risk. Key areas include:
Manual handling of furniture, boxes and equipment, including lifting technique, team lifting and use of trolleys and other aids.
Access to properties, including stairs, narrow corridors, uneven surfaces, loading areas and shared spaces.
Vehicle movements, loading and unloading, securing loads, and working near traffic or in confined locations.
Weather conditions, lighting and other environmental factors that may affect safe operations.
Where necessary, written safe systems of work will be developed and communicated to staff. These will cover, for example, correct lifting procedures, safe stacking of goods, handling of fragile or high-value items, and use of any specialist moving equipment.
Training, Information and Supervision
Movers Soho will provide appropriate induction and ongoing training tailored to the needs of the removals industry. This will include, as relevant to each role:
Manual handling techniques to minimise the risk of musculoskeletal injuries.
Safe loading and unloading of vehicles and securing loads for transport.
Use of lifting aids, ramps, straps and other moving equipment.
Awareness of common hazards in customer premises and how to manage them.
Driving safety and journey planning for staff who operate vehicles.
Supervisors will monitor work activities to ensure procedures are followed and to provide support, coaching and feedback. Additional training will be provided when new equipment, processes or services are introduced.
Equipment, Vehicles and Personal Protective Equipment
All equipment and vehicles used by Movers Soho will be maintained in a safe condition and inspected at appropriate intervals in line with legal requirements and manufacturer guidance. Defective items will be removed from service until repaired or replaced.
Suitable personal protective equipment may be provided where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. This may include safety footwear, gloves, high-visibility clothing and other items, depending on the task and location. Staff must use the equipment issued to them and look after it properly.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
Movers Soho will maintain procedures for reporting and investigating accidents, incidents and near misses. All incidents will be reviewed to identify underlying causes and lessons learned. Where necessary, risk assessments and work procedures will be updated and additional training or controls introduced.
Emergency arrangements will be in place to deal with situations such as fire, serious injury, spillages and vehicle collisions. Staff will be made aware of relevant procedures and their specific responsibilities in the event of an emergency.
Consultation and Review
Movers Soho is committed to consulting with employees on health and safety issues. Suggestions for improvements are encouraged and will be considered as part of our continuous improvement process.
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry standards, our operations or the findings of audits and incident investigations. A current version of the policy will always be made available to employees and customers on request.
By working together and maintaining high standards of health and safety, Movers Soho aims to deliver reliable, efficient and safe removal services for every customer and every move.
